Women Empowerment – Community Development
Stalwart Communities Africa – an arm of The Stalwart Group (TSG), is a social enterprise that works towards creating and strengthening sustainable communities across Nigeria and Africa. In line with this vision, we undertook a project – Kabusa Women Empowerment Scheme (Kabusa – WES). This project was concerned with empowering and equipping women with practical and entrepreneurial skills, so they can infiltrate the workforce and become leaders in the community.
Kabusa, a community in the Northern part of Nigeria, is a dual settlement having both the features of urbanized and undeveloped areas in one locality. It is a thickly populated settlements made up of settlers from the Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and Tiv cultures.
After carrying out a thorough Needs Assessment in the community, it became imperative to embark on a Skills Training exercise for the women of the community. To actualize this, letters were sent to the leadership of the community as part of SCA’s social impact strategy. A programme was proposed, and a communiqué was drafted and forwarded to the community.
In response to the communiqué, a field survey was organized to collect relevant qualitative and quantitative data of interested participants for the proposed social impact programme. The participants were welcomed by Miss Kate (CEO, The Stalwart Group) who with a brief introduction talked about SCA; the vision, mission and why it was important to be part of this programme. Over two hundred (200) participants signified interest and indicated on the forms the skills they would love to learn. There was so much excitement and enthusiasm as the women were impressed with the leadership of the SCA team and The Stalwart Group (TSG) group. They looked forward to a favourable partnership.
The Kabusa – WES project officially kick-started on the 27th of June, 2019 and went on for three days. The women were trained on the skills they had shown interest in. These skills include soap making, cake baking, Vaseline making, tailoring. In addition, SCA’s team also taught the women how to package and sell their products. They were also taught record keeping and how they could get funds.
